Most of the people believe that horses can get a lot of sleep while standing up. It has become somewhat of a myth. So imagine my surprise when I saw 7 huge horses lying down in the ground. At first I was shocked and even frightened, but when I heard these horses snoring and farting, I couldn’t stop laughing.
In reality horses do lie down to sleep but only when they require REM sleep. Typically, the amount of REM sleep they require is very small, so they don’t need to lie down often. The reason they sleep while standing up is mostly because in the wild they need to constantly be conscious of the predators. But inside this 320-acre horse retreat run by Liz Mitten Ryan, none of these horses feel threatened by outside predators. So they find it easy to lie down and relax as much as they can.
